This year we celebrate many great milestones. In 1963, the Yolngu people of Yirrkala in Arnhem Land sent two bark petitions to the Australian House of Representatives protesting the Commonwealth’s granting of mining rights on their country. The petitions were the first traditional documents recognised by the Commonwealth Parliament and helped shape the nation’s acknowledgement of Aboriginal people and their land rights.
